She is turning heads right now. She is topping many charts. She is a star that is ready to shine brighter than ever. She is Olivia Rodrigo, the star of the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (2019-present). On January 8, she released ‘drivers license’ which is just her second single as a lead artist and the lead single for her upcoming EP. What can we say? SHE KILLED IT! With the tracks’ production, melody, lyrics and vocals, there is no denying (and mark our words), the song is set for a massive success.
Is it the atmospheric production of this sentimental pop ballad that set the tone for the track’s vibe that everyone of us are hooked? Yes, among others. The production of the song is so well-arranged. We love that every element was kind of built around the piano—simple yet not plain, simply elegant. It is one of the best ballads we have heard in a while. This may also be because the melody of the song is catchy and not complicated. It got us thinking, “oh yeah, everything about this track is the right amount.” And if you know human nature, you’ll know that right amounts only keep us wanting more. And so we have been listening to this song non-stop.
Every good production deserves at least good vocals. Olivia Rodrigo has a spectacular voice. It is engaging, it is heart-wrenching, it is captivating. We heard the sadness the song wanted to deliver. We heard the pain and we felt it. In this track alone, she gave us range. Those high notes were perfect for emphasis and message-delivery, the falsettos were soul-shaking. We can’t imagine any other artist singing this song. She was born to write and sing ‘drivers license.’
The lyrics are pretty straight-forward. It is full of longing and even anger to an extent. The heartbreak, resentment, remorse, endless oblivion and need for clarity is perfectly encapsulated in the lyrics. We just love when lyrics are not shallow and they really mean something. The lyrics tells a beautiful story. That’s enough. It made us want to go for a drive and just blast this song to live the moment (Yes, it’s totally in our playlist on the way to work).
It has come to our attention that many people will get mad. We get it. If anything, it is a compliment to Olivia Rodrigo who is a star looming to shine brighter. So if you ever come across another artist’s fan coming for Olivia, just smile and think about the quality of ‘drivers license.’ After all, and even if the song is an emotional ballad, getting your driver’s license is always an achievement. Keep up the good work Olivia!
Red lights, stop signs
I still see your face in the white cars, front yards
Can’t drive past the places we used to go to
‘Cause I still fucking love you, babe(retrieved from https://genius.com/Olivia-rodrigo-drivers-license-lyrics)
